Influence of cooking variables in the organosolv pulping of wheat straw using mixtures of ethanol, acetone, and water.Application: Acetone acetone (ăs`ĭtōn), dimethyl ketone (dīmĕth`əl kē`tōn), or 2-propanone (prō`pənōn), CH3COCH3 pulping produces the best pulp and paper sheets from wheat straw, but it takes a higher solvent concentration and a higher pressure than ethanol-acetone pulping takes. This study of wheat straw pulping by use of a mixture of ethanol ethanol (ĕth`ənōl') or ethyl alcohol, CH3CH2OH, a colorless liquid with characteristic odor and taste; commonly called grain alcohol or simply alcohol. , acetone, and water, examines the influence of independent variables on pulp properties (yield and the holocellulose, [alpha]-cellulose, and lignin lignin (lĭg`nĭn), a highly polymerized and complex chemical compound especially common in woody plants. The cellulose walls of the wood become impregnated with lignin, a process called lignification, which greatly increases the strength and contents) and on paper sheet properties (breaking length, stretch, burst index, tear index, and brightness). To minimize solvents losses through recovery and recycling recycling, the process of recovering and reusing waste products—from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and business—and thereby reducing their burden on the environment. and to increase pulp yield, wheat straw can be cooked at 180[degrees]C, with an ethanol/(ethanol + acetone) ratio of 50%, a minimum (ethanol + acetone)/(ethanol + acetone + water) ratio of 35%, for 60 min. The results obtained in the ethanol-acetone, ethanol, and acetone pulping of wheat straw reveal that acetone pulping produces the best pulp and paper sheets. However, it uses a higher solvent concentration (40% vs. 35%) and a higher pressure (18x [10.sup.5] Pa vs. 14 x [10.sup.5] Pa) than ethanol-acetone pulping.
