Inflazyme Initiates Multi-Dose Phase I Clinical Trial with GH9001.

) today announced that it has commenced Phase Ib human clinical trials in the United Kingdom with GH9001, a novel antithrombotic compound being developed for the prevention of blood clotting blood clotting, process by which the blood coagulates to form solid masses, or clots. This Phase Ib study is a double-blind, placebo controlled, multi-dose study in healthy subjects, who will receive GH9001 subcutaneously, twice daily for 4 days, and a single dose on the 5th day. The study is designed to assess the safety and tolerability of the compound together with surrogate markers of activity through effects on measures of blood clotting.

GH9001 is a novel proprietary formulation of a medium molecular weight heparin and a highly sulfated, low molecular weight dermatan sulfate. Each component utilizes a different endogenous antithrombotic mechanism, utilizing antithrombin III and heparin cofactor II Heparin cofactor II is a coagulation factor that inhibits IIa, and is a cofactor for heparin and dermatan sulfate ("minor antithrombin"). GH9001 is being developed for the treatment and prevention of arterial thrombosis, where it is hoped that it will overcome many of the current deficiencies of anticoagulation therapy and provide improved treatment options.
