Infineon Technologies Selected to Supply Integrated POTS+ADSL Chipset Solution for Occam Networks' Broadband Loop Carrier Systems.

Infineon Technologies (NYSE:IFX)(FSE: IFX), a leading provider of integrated circuits for advanced communications systems, today announced that its GEMINAX (Global Enhanced Multiport Integrated ADSL Transceiver) chipset has been selected by Occam Networks Inc. for its Broadband Loop Carrier platform. With integrated support for voice and full-rate ADSL, the chipset will enable Occam to provide telecom carriers with cost-effective access network systems supporting end-to-end packet based transmission of combined voice/data services.

Occam Networks, a leading provider of advanced access network equipment, will use the GEMINAX chipset to provide integrated POTS Voice/Data capability in its recently announced BLC 1200 Remote Terminal (RT). A new category of carrier-class local loop product, Occam BLCs integrate the functionality of a DLC, DSLAM, and media gateway into a single flexible, scalable platform. The BLC 1200 RT is now in field trials.

Each GEMINAX chipset supports eight standards compliant ADSL ports and is fully programmable to meet both ADSL and legacy analog telephony specifications. This combination of standards compatibility and programmability provides significant benefits in both logistics and system cost through standardization of materials and assembly.

Infineon produces both data-only and Integrated Voice/Data (IVD) versions of the GEMINAX chipset. The Integrated/Voice Data (IVD) version of the chipset is the only available ADSL transceiver chipset with a fully integrated Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) splitter and support for baseband voice processing. This level of integration can significantly reduce Bill of Material (BOM) costs compared to multi-board solutions that require bulky and expensive external POTS splitters, ADSL line cards, and a traditional Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) voice line card for lifeline voice service.

Both versions of the GEMINAX chipset support Dr. DSL(R) from Aware, Inc. (Nasdaq:AWRE), an add-on firmware feature. Dr. DSL provides extensive support for transmission line probing and testing to pre-qualify loops prior to ADSL service activation. This capability allows line testing directly from the line cards, and even testing with no customer premise equipment installed.
