Infineon Technologies AG (ISIN: DE0006231004, FWB: IFX, NYSE: IFX) was founded in April 1999 when the semiconductor operations of parent company, Siemens AG, were spun off to form a separate legal entity.
(formerly Siemens Microelectronics) today announced that it is shipping the first ROM version of its MultiMediaCard(TM) devices with a 16 MByte memory capacity.

Infineon is the world's only semiconductor supplier to offer miniature mass storage devices using both ROM and flash technology.

ROM-MultiMediaCard devices are suitable for a vast range of highly innovative applications. When used as a sound carrier in music players, dictating machines and storytellers, MultiMediaCard devices enable up to 30 minutes of sound (music and voice) in CD quality using Microsoft Audio 4.0 compression technology. When applied as an electronic book in a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM). ) or Handheld Personal Computer (HPC (Handheld PC) A palmtop computer that weighs less than one pound and runs specialized versions of popular applications. Microsoft coined the term for its Windows CE operating system, which is an abbreviated version of Windows. See Pocket PC. ), MultiMediaCard devices can store up to 9,600 book pages and are ideally suited for use as dictionaries, phone books, city maps, and travel and hotel guides.

MultiMediaCard Technology Background

The MultiMediaCard direct data transfer via serial interface enables uninterrupted music consumption even while jogging jogging

Aerobic exercise involving running at an easy pace. Jogging (1967) by Bill Bowerman and W.E. Harris boosted jogging's popularity for fitness, weight loss, and stress relief.
, at rates up to 20 Mbit per second. Smaller than the average postal stamp, the MultiMediaCard device is the world's smallest removable solid state memory solution (24 x 32 x 1.4 millimeters) for mobile applications such as so-called solid-state players, portable video games See video game console. , PDAs and HPCs, mobile phones and laptops. The MultiMediaCard device is extremely rugged, light-weight, energy efficient, fast and cost-effective.

The general specification of the MultiMediaCard device has been standardized by the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA (MultiMediaCard Association, Beaverton, OR, www.mmca.org) A membership organization founded in 1998 to promote the MultiMediaCard (MMC) storage module used in cellphones, PDAs and other small handheld devices. ) and future enhancements are under discussion. The MultiMediaCard device is soon expected to establish itself as the new industry standard for removable storage media.
