Infineon Extends Broadband Chipset Portfolio with Solution for New ADSL2 Standard.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MUNICH, Germany & SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 2002

Telecom equipment providers around the world now can offer improved data rates and longer reach to customers providing broadband services to residential and business customers. Infineon Technologies (FSE FSE

The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  Digital Subscriber Line See DSL.

(communications, protocol) Digital Subscriber Line - (DSL, or Digital Subscriber Loop, xDSL - see below) A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and
(ADSL) transceiver chipset supporting the specifications of ADSL2 (G.dmt.bis), the new international standard for ADSL services.

The ADSL2 standard, designated as G.992.3/G.992.4 by the International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.
(ITU), increases loop reach to serve a larger customer base with ADSL service as well as extensive line diagnostic capabilities and sophisticated power saving modes. Other important features defined by the standard and now supported by the Infineon chipset are fast start up, All Digital Loop (ADL) and channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  voice.

To support the new standard, Infineon upgrades its proven Geminax(TM) Global Enhanced Multiport Integrated ADSL Transceiver chipset with an ADSL2 compliant data pump. The new chip is plug-in compatible with the existing Geminax ADSL Transceiver chipset. Equipment providers can easily upgrade existing line card designs by simply replacing the data pump chip, providing significant time to market advantage.

The Geminax ADSL Transceiver chipset makes it possible for Infineon customers to provide carriers with cost-effective, high density and low power access network systems supporting transmission of data-only or combined voice and data services. Used in central office digital subscriber line access module (networking, hardware) Digital Subscriber Line Access Module - (DSLAM, or Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) The generic term for the Central Office (CO) equipment where xDSL lines are terminated. The multiple DSL signals may be multiplexed onto a wideband channel such as ATM.  (DSLAM) and digital loop carrier In telephone communications, a technology that increases the number of channels in the local loop by converting analog signals to digital and multiplexing them back to the end office.  (DLC) systems, each Geminax ADSL Transceiver chipset supports eight standards compliant ADSL ports and is fully programmable to meet both ADSL and legacy analog telephony specifications. This combination of standards compatibility and programmability simplifies manufacturing and deployment logistics and reduces total system cost.

Infineon produces both data-only and Integrated Voice/Data (IVD) versions of the Geminax ADSL Transceiver chipset. The Integrated/Voice Data (IVD) version of the chipset is the only available ADSL transceiver chipset with a fully integrated Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) splitter and support for baseband voice processing. This level of integration can significantly reduce Bill of Material (BOM) costs compared to multi-board solutions that require bulky and expensive external POTS splitters, ADSL line cards, and a traditional Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) voice line card for lifeline voice service.

Samples of the Geminax ADSL Transceiver chipset with support for ADSL2 are now available. More information is available at www.infineon.com/adsl.
