Infineon's BlueMoon-Single-Chip to Achieve Bluetooth Qualification: Lowest cost and fastest time-to-market through ``Fast Track Qualification''.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2002

Infineon Technologies For the raceway, see .

Infineon Technologies AG (ISIN: DE0006231004, FWB: IFX, NYSE: IFX) was founded in April 1999 when the semiconductor operations of parent company, Siemens AG, were spun off to form a separate legal entity.
(FSE/NYSE: IFX IFX - ["Type Reconstruction with First-Class Polymorphic Values", J. O'Toole et al, SIGPLAN Notices 24(7):207-217 (Jul 1989)]. ) today announced that the BlueMoon(TM) Single chip achieved full compliance with Bluetooth specification 1.1. The device has been listed as a qualified component including radio frequency, baseband and protocol software tests by 7 layers AG, Germany. All tests have been carried out over the temperature range of -50(degree)C to +105(degree)C, proving the outstanding performance of this device.

BlueMoon Single is a pure CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  Bluetooth single chip system solution including baseband controller, integrated ROM memory and RF transceiver providing an excellent performance of -85dBm sensitivity over the full temperature range with lowest bill of material and minimal board space requirements due to it's high level of integration.

The combination of lowest cost and highest performance together with sophisticated power management features makes this IC ideally suited for battery driven, handheld devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and digital cameras.

"The qualification and corresponding listing of our cost breaking BlueMoon Single represents a major milestone in our Bluetooth developments" explained Hubert Christl, vice president and general manager, Local Area Wireless at Infineon Technologies. " It shortens time to market and expenses of our customers especially when participating in 7 layers' Fast Track Qualification program."

"The Infineon BlueMoon Single is the first completely integrated single chip Bluetooth solution passing the complete Bluetooth compliance tests for RF as well as protocol tests according to according to

BlueMoon Single is offered at a price below 5 US$ in high volume quantities. Samples are available now, volume production is planned for summer 2002.

About BlueMoon Single

BlueMoon(tm) Single is the world's highest integrated semiconductor solution for the Blue-tooth short-range wireless technology. This solution combines baseband DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive , radio functionality, memory and software, all integrated into one single-chip and is aimed at applications requiring Bluetooth functionality in small form factor such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants.

BlueMoon(tm) Single complements Infineon's BlueMoon(tm) family and targets applications where size is of highest priority. The BlueMoon(tm) family now is the broadest semiconductor solutions offering worldwide and comprises solutions optimized for each of the main application segments. BlueMoon(tm) Single combines Infineon's expertise in radio circuit design with state-of-the-art CMOS technology. The advanced architecture is based on the already proven and Bluetooth V1.1 qualified baseband technology The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter.

About the Fast Track Qualification program

Based on long-term experience with testing and qualifying wireless systems, 7 layers has developed the highly efficient InterLab(R) system. It makes excellent use of qualified reference designs and components, so that Bluetooth qualification for end-user product manufacturers becomes more efficient.

The InterLab(R) system for professional testing safeguards that all information about the reference designs - necessary for fast track qualification - can be distributed easily to a connected InterLab(R) laboratory of the manufacturers choice and that all InterLab(R) laboratories work to the same high standard, so that test results of qualified components, like the BlueMoon-Single,.can be integrated into test projects for end-user products.

The global InterLab(R) network for Bluetooth products consists today of 12 associated test facilities worldwide in Europe, USA, Japan and China.
