Dr. Kuhar, president of Pharmacists for Life, outlines the effects of oral contraceptives and other abortifacients. First he describes the effects of oral contraceptives (the "Pill"), one effect of which is to render the lining of the womb inimical to implantation of a child conceived and thus to cause an early abortion, since no oral contraceptive prevents conception all the time. Next he describes forty-seven estrogen and progestin oral contraceptives and four progestin ones. Then he describes drugs and devices which are primarily abortifacient: eleven anti-progesterones, progestins (such as Depo-Provera and Norplant), and vaccines; four prostaglandins; and four intrauterine devices (IUDS). Finally, using reliable data, he estimates the true annual number of abortions in the United Stated, and what produces them:

Using the lower estimates, we see that, in addition to the 1,500,000 abortions caused surgically, there are 8,159,000 other abortions in the United States annually, so that chemical abortions--that is, infant homicides caused by contraceptive pills and so-called contraceptives--outnumber surgical abortions 5.4 to 1. Using the higher estimates, this rises to 8.5 to 1.

Since everything but population is the same in Canada as in the United States, we can say that the true number of abortions in Canada, taking the number of surgical abortions as 100,000 is really between 640,000 and 950,000.
