Industry mourns loss of New Jersey developer.


Joseph J. Bukiet, a prominent New Jersey real estate developer and Holocaust survivor who shared his story with thousands of students and was a founder of the American Holocaust Museum The term Holocaust museum may refer to:

, died on June 12 in Clifton, NJ. He was 81.

The cause of his death was complications from kidney and gastrointestinal failure said his son, the novelist, Melvin Jules.

Mr. Bukiet, who was born in Proszowice, Poland was interned in Asuchwitz as a teenager and survived by calling out to guards that he was "twenty one, healthy and a carpenter," all fabrications, but qualities that he knew would be useful to his German guards. He survived a succession of camps including Birkeneau, Buchenwald, and Theresienstadt. At war's end War's End is a journalistic comic about the Bosnian War written by Joe Sacco. It contains two stories; the first, Christmas with Karadzic, about tracking down and meeting the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić, and the second, Soba  he weighed 88 pounds and had lost both parents and a brother and sister. His brother Al, also survived and is now a partner in the real estate company.

Bukiet arrived in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in 1948 and launched the real estate company that today bears his name by helping his neighbors make small repairs and additions to their homes. That company, Bukiet Building & Management Co., which is based in Clifton, has been responsible for the creation of thousands of residential dwellings, office buildings, apartment complexes and shopping centers.

The firm has received a host of prestigious awards including the New Jersey Planning Officials Association Award of Achievement and the New Jersey Architects Award of Merit. Professional Builders Magazine has included the Bukiet company among the nation's top builders. Mr. Bukiet had been a frequent commentator on New Jersey real estate for CNBC-TV and MSNBC MSNBC Microsoft/National Broadcasting Company .

Mr. Bukiet made sharing the message of the Holocaust his major lifetime commitment. He visited schools, churches, colleges and synagogues to tell his story to others "so that they will know and will never let this happen again."

Mr. Bukiet served as president of the Jewish Federation A Jewish Federation is a confederation of various Jewish social agencies, volunteer programs, educational bodies, and related organizations, found within most cities in North America that host a viable Jewish community.  of Greater Clifton-Passaic, and chaired many philanthropic organizations including the American Mizrachi, the Passage to Freedom Drive, the Opening of the Valley of the Destroyed Communities at Yad Vashem Yad Vashem (יד ושם) — ("Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority") — is Israel's official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust established in 1953 through the Memorial Law passed by the Knesset, Israel's parliament.  and New Jersey State Israel Bonds. He was named Man of the Year by the American Society of Yad Vashem, I and was a recipient of the National Israel Bond Peace Medal and the New Life Medal. Bukiet was a member of the New. Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education and a board member of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors There are many famous Holocaust survivors who survived the Nazi genocides in Europe and went on to achievements of great fame and notability. Those listed here were, at the very least, residents of the parts of Europe occupied by the Axis powers during World War II who survived .
