He has authored over 90 technical papers, and is a regular instructor at the PCB Design conferences. He has a bachelor's in chemical engineering and a master's in computer science from Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885. . After spending the bulk of his career at Hewlett-Packard, he has worked for Westwood Associates, TechLead Corp. and Merix.

Novak is a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems Inc., where he is engaged in the design and characterization of power-distribution networks and packages for Sun servers, and is known for expertise in signal integrity design of high-speed serial and parallel buses. Novak has over 20 years experience with high-speed digital, RF and analog circuits and system design. He is an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  Fellow for his contributions to the fields of signal-integrity, RF measurements and simulation methodologies.
