Boole & Babbage Announces Inaugural Best Practices for S/390

Awards Program

Boole & Babbage(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:BOOL), today announced the 'Call for Entries' for its inaugural Best Practices for S/390 Performance and Automation Management Awards.

The awards will be judged by an independent panel of industry experts and IT leaders including: Bill Keyworth, GartnerGroup; Tom Oleson, IDC; Jerry King, Jerald King & Associates, Carl Greiner, META Group; and Cheryl Watson, Watson & Walker.

The entries will be evaluated on measurable achievements realized through S/390 systems management implementation and the associated automation strategy. Each entry will be reviewed based on critical success factors such as the planning and evaluation process, implementation strategies and the results realized to date.

"Because S/390 is a fairly mature technology, you do not see companies receiving much recognition for successful implementations," said Cheryl Watson of Watson & Walker. The inaugural Best Practices in S/390 Awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the 12th annual Boole & Babbage User Group (BBUG) conference at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada from June 6-10, 1999. This year's winning implementations will be showcased during the OS/390 Performance and Automation track at the conference.

BBUG '99 will feature new methods for IT managers to successfully develop and implement leading-edge IT management strategies through expert instruction and advice, first-hand business case studies and demonstrations.

Entry forms are now available on www.boole.com and the call for entries is open until April 12, 1999. The awards program is open to call companies who have deployed the Boole & Babbage MainView(R) solution in a Parallel Sysplex environment.

The Judges

William Keyworth, research director -- GartnerGroup

Keyworth is responsible for analysis of problem and change management for the GartnerGroup. Prior to joining, Keyworth was the director of Business Development at Digital Equipment Corp. for both Internet technologies and network and system management products. During his twenty years of computer networking experience, Keyworth has completed various engineering, business, sales and marketing roles for wide area and local area networking as well as voice communications within NYNEX, Pacific Telesis, and Digital.

Thomas D. Oleson -- research director, IT advisor service,

International Data Corporation

Thomas Oleson brings years of MIS experience to his role as research director of IDC's IT Advisor service. He focuses on the management of the IS function and brings an understanding of how IS relates to the entire enterprise, and the financial impact of IT on client companies. Before joining IDC, Oleson served for more than 25 years in a variety of corporate and MIS positions at John Hancock Financial Services.

Oleson is a widely recognized authority on the subject of information technology financial management and has been a featured speaker at many industry conferences. His work with IDC has spanned the areas of IT management and asset management. His most current work has been in understanding the impact of the Year 2000 problem on corporations.

Jerald E. King, president -- Jerald King & Associates

Beginning in 1984, King began working full time as an independent consultant to several major mainframe consulting and software organizations including, Watson & Walker, Boole & Babbage, LEGENT, and Weyerhaeuser. His consulting practice deals primarily with very large data processing installations that use IBM MVS systems.

King has over 30 years experience, working for companies like ARCO Petroleum Products, Weyerhauser Co. and ARCO Cherry Point refinery, in a wide range of data processing and scientific areas. He has had extensive technical education in statistics, capacity planning and performance management. He started developing capacity performance tools in 1975 and has worked continually since then with most major MVS performance and capacity tools

Carl Greiner, vice president and director enterprise data center

strategies -- META Group

Greiner heads the Enterprise Data Center Strategies service at META Group. He has more than 30 years of experience in all segments of the large systems environment. Before joining META Group in April 1993, he was vice president and director of the storage service and most recently, group vice president of software services including open systems and client/server at GartnerGroup.

Previously, he spent 24 years at IBM, where his responsibilities primarily involved IBM's worldwide large systems strategies and offerings. Before leaving IBM in 1990, Greiner held key management positions in Enterprise Systems headquarters. Specific areas of specialization include: Technology Strategies & Directions, Migration Strategies, Negotiation Strategies Organizational Issues, Strategic Planning & Plan Review, RFP Evaluation & Guidance, Asset Management, and Year 2000 Strategies.

Cheryl Watson, president -- Watson & Walker, Inc.

Cheryl Watson is an internationally known consultant who has worked in the IBM mainframe industry since 1965. Watson is president of Watson & Walker, Inc. which she founded in 1986. Since 1991 she has been principal author of Cheryl Watson's TUNING Letter, a journal of MVS and OS/390 advice now read by analysts around the world. Her video classes on performance measurement are popular both here and abroad.
