Industry Demonstrates Internet Standards.

A coalition of electronics manufacturers, solution providers and standards organizations demonstrated the exchange of engineering and manufacturing data via the Internet at the recent RosettaNet (Santa Ana, CA) Partner Conference. Based on proposed IPC (Northbrook, IL) and RosettaNet standards, this prototype demonstration illustrated how the manufacturing supply web can increase efficiencies, shorten time to market and improve return on investment (ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). ) by using standards-based interfaces to exchange data between partners.

The standards showcased are the first of several initiated by the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative's (NEMI NEMI National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative
NEMI National Environmental Methods Index
, Herndon, VA) Virtual Factory Information Interchange Project (VFIIP). VFIIP has worked closely with RosettaNet and IPC to ensure consistency between the two organizations' standards.

In the prototype demo, proposed RosettaNet Partner Interface Processes (PIPs) 2C1 through 2C6, and the proposed IPC-2578 standard, were used to support data interchange between two original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), represented by Nortel Networks (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and Intel (Santa Clara, CA), two electronics manufacturing services Electronic manufacturing services (EMS) is term used for companies that design, test, manufacture, distribute and provide return/repair services for electronic component and assemblies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).  (EMS) providers, represented by SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. It can transfer data up to 1GBytes/sec.

Systems (Huntsville, AL) and Georgia Institute of Technology Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Ga.; coeducational; state supported; chartered 1885, opened 1888. It is a member school in the university system of Georgia. Significant among its facilities and programs are the Frank H.  (Atlanta, GA), and a supplier, represented by NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology.  (Gaithersburg, MD).

In the demo, the OEMs sent two different bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  (BOMs) to each of the EMS providers, and the BOMs were loaded into the respective systems. In addition, the supplier initiated an engineering change request that was communicated back through the EMS providers to the OEMs. The significance of these interactions is that they were accomplished using three different gateway products and the participants were loading the BOM information into different back-end systems.
