Industrial revolution: middle school.

The Art Problem

Students look to artists Louise Nevelson Noun 1. Louise Nevelson - United States sculptor (born in Russia) known for massive shapes of painted wood (1899-1988)
Nevelson
(for her relief sculptures) and Christo and Jeanne-Claude Christo (born Hristo Yavashev, Bulgarian: Христо Явашев) and Jeanne-Claude (born Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon) are a married couple who create environmental installation art.  (for their recent Central Park installation of The Gates) and create a collaborative artwork. Each student creates a 10" (25 cm) square relief sculpture to be joined with others and installed in the hallway.

Objectives

1. Students become familiar with the work of Louise Nevelson and Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

2. Students creatively demonstrate asymmetrical balance, repetition and a minimum of three levels of relief.

Guiding Practice

1. We reviewed news coverage of The Gates and a PowerPoint presentation of Nevelson's work to note the artists' use of form, repetition, balance, and impact on the public.

2. Students sketched three asymmetrical designs. The best design was chosen, transferred to and cut from foam board Foam board is a type of display board made primarily with foam. It generally consists of a foam core in between two sheets of thin, rigid paper; and is characterized by its light weight, and the ease with which it is scored. . We made modifications to enhance the design. We layered shapes and glued to a 10" square of foam board.

3. Students added smaller found objects to the square. Students critiqued each other's designs to see that the requirements were being met and to suggest improvements in design. The objects were then glued on.

4. Students painted the square with black acrylic paint. Gold and silver wax metallic finish was added to create an industrial look and to create contrast between the various shapes.

5. Students arranged and glued nine designs on a 20 x 30"(51 x 76 cm) piece of foam board. We discussed the balance and flow of each design from one to another.
