Roman Catholic Church An indulgence that remits the full temporal punishment incurred by a sinner. is granted to each member of the faithful under the usual conditions (sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer in keeping with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin) each and every time they participate attentively in a sacred function or a devotional exercise undertaken in honour of the Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed or conserved in the Tabernacle Tabernacle (tăb`ərnăk'əl), in the Bible, the portable holy place of the Hebrews during their desert wanderings. It was a tent, like the portable tent-shrines used by ancient Semites, set up in each camp; eventually it housed the Ark .... The faithful who, through illness or other just cause, are unable to visit the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist in a church or oratory may obtain a Plenary Indulgence in their own homes, or wherever they may be because of their ailment ailĀ·ment n. A physical or mental disorder, especially a mild illness. , if, ... with the intention of observing the three usual conditions as soon as possible, they make the visit spiritually and with the heart's desire, ... and recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a pious invocation to Jesus in the Sacrament." If a Plenary Indulgence is obtained, all punishment for sins committed is remitted. If the conditions are not fully met (such as not being completely removed from attachment to every form of sin) they become Partial Indulgences. The Confession must be made within a week before or after the day on which the other conditions are fulfilled. Plenary Indulgences may be gained only once a day. Partial Indulgences, given for any of a number of things, including any act of charity or any act of penance, remit part of the punishment; there are no other conditions.
