Indian community celebrates 63rd Independence Day with great fervour.

MUSCAT Eoe1/4" The large Indian community in Oman celebrated the 63rd Indian Independence Day yesterday with great fanfare.

Anil Wadhwa, Indian ambassador to the Sultanate, unfurled the Indian national flag and read out the presidentEoe1/4aos address at ceremonies held at Indian School Darsait and on the Indian embassy premises in the morning.

The ceremony at the embassy and the Indian School Darsait was attended by members of the Indian community from all walks of life.

In his speech after reading out the Indian President Pratibha PatilEoe1/4aos address, Wadhwa extended his congratulations to all Indians and persons of Indian origin living in Oman.

Highlighting developments in India, the ambassador said, Eoe1/4EoOur vision of India is an India that upholds the values of democracy and values of a democratic system, an India that celebrates its diversity by rejoicing in its unity; an India that will be a developed country economically, politically and in the human developmental aspects; an India which will be a place where all can live with dignity. These are components of that dream which our fore fathers had and which has also been outlined in our

constitution.Eoe1/4A[yen]

Talking about the economy, Wadhwa pointed out that the country had shown resilience during the current global melt-down.

Sound economy

Eoe1/4EoNow the Indian economy and markets have started to show positive results. The Indian stock markets are also on the rise,Eoe1/4A[yen] he said.

Eoe1/4EoThe global slowdown has posed tough challenges for India and the world. However, the first quarter of 2009 has shown signs of recovery, and, once again, the Indian economy has shown its deep rooted, strong and robust economic and marketing system. Moreover, India has maintained its position as one of the most attractive nations for FDI and one of the fastest growing nations. According to latest predictions, IndiaEoe1/4aos GDP growth in 2008-09 is projected to be around 6.7 per cent,Eoe1/4A[yen] he added.

Thanking His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the ambassador said, Eoe1/4EoMy best wishes to the friendly people of Oman in all their future endeavours for the development of the Sultanate and for their personal well being. Close ties

Talking of India and Oman ties, the ambassador informed, Eoe1/4EoDespite worldwide recession, bilateral trade between India and Oman had tripled in the past three years and total trade in 2008 touched $2 billion.Eoe1/4A[yen]

He informed that the two countries had already entered into large scale economic cooperation, especially through numerous joint ventures between the companies of the two countries.

Eoe1/4EoThe important Indian companies present in Oman are Omifco, L&T Oman LLC, Gammon India, Nagarjuna Construction Company, Afcons International, Oman Shapoorji Constructions Co. LLC, Punj Lloyd and Universal Erectors Limited to name a few,Eoe1/4A[yen] he said.

Eoe1/4EoReliance and a consortium of Gail, HPCL, BPCL and Videocon have won the rights to explore oil blocks while Shiv-Vani, Dodsal and Dewanchand Ramsaran Group are in oil drilling businesses in Oman. Bhel has also obtained some excellent contracts from PDO for erection of power plants and supply of gas compressors and transformers,Eoe1/4A[yen] the ambassador added.

IT revolution

Eoe1/4EoIndian IT companies have helped Oman in setting up an IT Park (Knowledge Oasis) with two IT Colleges. IIM Ahmedabad has entered into a tie-up with Competence HR LLC. Omani Ministry of Finance & Omantel, has an existing deal with HCL & Tech Mahindra for BPO work. Parsvanath Developers has a tie-up with Al Hassan Engineering Company for real estate development in Oman. Tata Group has floated a company Reemal Mining Company with the Al Bahja Group. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited and Steel Authority of India Ltd are also negotiating with the Omani authorities for securing limestone mining concessions in Oman. NTPC has sent a proposal for collaboration with Oman Oil Company for setting up two 250 MW coal-based power plants. Lifeline Hospitals of Chennai and Al Hayat Polyclinic of Oman are about to set up a referral centre in Oman. Engineers India Limited has signed a $80 million EPC contract with Sohar Refinery Company to set up an asphalt plant,Eoe1/4A[yen] he

said. Eoe1/4EoGodrej, Asian Paints, Videocon, TVS Group, Jyoti switchgear plant, Consultancy Engineering Services KEC, TClL, Indian Oiltanking Ltd, Majid Water Cooler (Blue Star) and Wapcos, Reliant Surveyors, are a few names which represent the Indian manufacturing sector in Oman,Eoe1/4A[yen] he said.

Talking of OmanEoe1/4aos investment in India, he said, Eoe1/4EoOver the last few years, Oman has also invested in India in refineries, pharmaceutical industry, home furniture and the equities market. Omani joint ventures in India include OCS InternationalEoe1/4aos software park in Bangalore, Shantha Bio-techniquesEoe1/4ao hepatitis B vaccines plant, Nisma Aircon InternationalEoe1/4aos heat pump air conditioners plant in Chennai, Raha Poly-products in Secunderabad and Bahwan GroupEoe1/4aos software company in Chennai. Petrogas E&P LLC has been awarded three exploration blocks in India under NELP-VI together with leading Indian Oil companies. MB Holding Company LLC has an office in New Delhi to look after its India operations. Trivandrum International School and Kenton Leisure Services Pvt Ltd are promoted by Saif Salim Essa Al Harasi & Co. LLC. Oman Investment Fund has picked up some equity in Nimbus. Oman Chemical & Pharmaceutical Company LLC has recently opened a branch office of the company in Baroda.Eoe1/4A[yen]

Talking of the embassyEoe1/4aos community welfare efforts, Anil Wadhwa said, Eoe1/4EoI would like to point out that the embassy has established a dedicated wing to cater exclusively to the Indian workforce. The embassy has also introduced compulsory attestation of service agreement of all household workers which includes mandatory insurance cover and provision of mobile phone by the employer. The embassy has introduced open house sessions on every third Friday of the month to provide an additional informal platform to address the problem of the workers. The commencement of the free legal counselling sessions twice in every week to guide and assist Indian nationals on their legal rights and responsibilities vis-EaAa-vis their grievances will surely help our expatriates. A 24x7 helpline service for distressed Indian workers has also been established.Eoe1/4A[yen]
