Byline: datta03

Indian telecom operators are expanding their optical fibre network in the country with an eye on increasing revenues from enterprise customers.

Idea Cellular, Aircel and Powertel (the telecom-focused business unit of power transmission major PowerGrid) have taken the lead here. The idea is to lease out broadband capacity on the enhanced optical infrastructure to overseas telecom operators, in addition to supporting their own communication needs.

Maxis Communications-owned Aircel proposes to increase the reach of its optical fibre network to 25,000 route km from 10,000 route km, says Mr Mallikarjuna Rao, Chief, Network and Engineering Operations.

It is also keen to offer bandwidth capacity to overseas telcos with customers in India.

Mr Rao sees economic sense in co-building and co-sharing optical infrastructure given the high costs associated with building them.

Powertel expects to have optical fibre lines of 31,000 route km in the next two years, said a company official.

BSNL has the largest optical fibre cable network in the country, comprising at least 600,000 route km covering all State capitals and district headquarters.
