Independence Day groundbreaking.

The historic groundbreaking of the 1776-foot Freedom Tower will take place on America's 228th anniversary of Independence.

Dignitaries including Gov. George Pataki and New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and developer Larry Silverstein will gather at Ground Zero July 4, with the placement of the cornerstone of what is to be the tallest building in the world taking place at 10 a.m.

"America and the world will witness as our plans go from paper to steel," Pataki said after 9/11.
