The total enrollment is 7,464 students.[1]The District was the pilot district in the Start S.M.A.R.T. Program in 2002. in Erie is the Pennsylvania winner of The Civic Star Award for a program that began in 1989 as a way to increase student interest and learning in science. The program has since expanded to other areas and to a wider range of community participants. The program began after Superintendent Dr. Verel Salmon asked area businesses in 1988 for their time and expertise in helping to enhance the elementary school elementary school: see school. science curriculum, improve students' science knowledge and skills and their attitude toward the subject and to help provide some real-world understanding of science applications. An additional goal was to provide positive role models for students in science fields so that early exposure to the practical aspects of the subject might encourage them to pursue a science-oriented career path. The presentations demonstrated real-life science applications and a related industry product. The presenters also discussed career paths and the benefits of working for their companies.
