Terabyte Storage Area Network to Increase Scalability, Speed,

Reliability and Reporting

Prospero Technologies, the leading provider of community infrastructure for Web businesses, today completed initial implementation of a state-of-the-art storage area network (SAN), more than doubling the speed of the company's present storage subsystems, increasing total storage by a factor of eight, and enabling the performance of repairs and upgrades without impacting site stability. Implementation of the top-of-the-line SAN technology, typically deployed by only the largest Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

, application service providers and interactive media/content sites, is the first phase of Prospero's long-term technology strategy to meet rapidly increasing demand for the company's services.

The Symmetrix 3930, manufactured by Mass.-based EMC Corporation EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) is an American Fortune 500 and S&P 500 manufacturer of software and systems for information management and storage. It is headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA. , replaces the distributed RAID technology that previously supported the database servers in Prospero's Internet data center. The use of fiber optic technology -- including the fastest fiber-channel switch currently in production -- enables each database server to connect to its data via redundant100 megabyte per second A megabyte per second (MB/s or MBps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to:
  • 1,000,000 bytes per second, or
  • 1,000 kilobytes per second, or
  • 8 Megabits per second.
channels. The SAN holds up to 19 terabytes of storage and 16 gigabytes of performance-enhancing cache.

Each component of the SAN supports innovative features such as "Call Home," an on-board diagnostic processor enabling the system to monitor itself and warn administrators of potential difficulties so they can be addressed invisibly to end-users. The Call Home capability instantaneously notifies EMC's support center, which offers a first-call fix rate of more than 99 percent. Prospero has deployed most elements of EMC's comprehensive storage management suite, including TimeFinder, a parallel processing parallel processing, the concurrent or simultaneous execution of two or more parts of a single computer program, at speeds far exceeding those of a conventional computer.  capability allowing automated snapshots and duplications of data. Prospero will use the snapshot capability to conduct non-intrusive backups and generate usage reports for clients based on recent copies of live data. In addition, every component of this system is redundant, allowing replacement of any element without service disruption.

"The SAN solves storage management and growth issues common to all high-volume service providers and companies with fast-growing files," said Chip Matthes, chief technology officer of Prospero Technologies. "Many of our clients use Prospero's reporting to better target their offerings, and to better inform their business decisions, both on and off the Web. This new technology allows us to enhance management reporting while simultaneously increasing the speed and reliability of the infrastructure."

Prospero has been utilizing a smaller EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Data is being migrated from it and from distributed RAID arrays to the new SAN as part of a phased and tested approach scheduled for completion in June.
