The Human Wealth of Nations Rupert Murdoch Thank you very much, Premier Bracks. And to President Sam Lipski Sam Lipski AM (born in Melbourne in 1938) is a distinguished Australian journalist. He has been editor-in-chief of the Australian Jewish News and has worked as a reporter and columnist for The Age, The Australian, The Bulletin and The Sydney Morning Herald. and Frances Awcock of the State Library of Victoria, I would like to extend my greetings and my gratitude on this truly memorable occasion. It is a great privilege to be here tonight to mark the renewed association of the Library and the Murdoch family. When I was an errant er·rant adj. 1. Little did they know the extent to which they were correct. The State Library of Victoria, one of this country's first public libraries, is indeed a national treasure. For nearly 150 years the Library has provided the literature, information and history of the world to all Victorians. Perhaps even more important, the Library has been a leader in the preservation of Australian literature Australian literature, the literature of Australia. Because the vast majority of early Australian settlers were transported prisoners, the beginnings of Australian literature were oral rather than written. and heritage. It is an honor to have my father's name attached to such a crucial and beloved institution. Keith Murdoch had several principles in common with the State Library of Victoria and with public libraries across the nation, principles that are fundamental to any modern democracy. Dedication to the cause of knowledge and its fair distribution. A faith in the permanent value of the written word. And the determination to provide each and every curious citizen with access to the information that empowers us all. The role of public libraries is more vital today than ever before, as information has become the world's most valuable currency. It is a role that will only become more imperative in the future.
