In-mold film decorates large PUR flat-screen TV.

A new patented production process combines polyurethane structural rigid foam with a decorative thermoplastic film in the mold to produce the Gran Cinema RTX series of flat-screen televisions from Italian manufacturer SIM 2 Multimedia S.p.A. The tv housings are based on the Baydur 60 PUR integral skin rigid foam system from Bayer MaterialScience (U.S. office in Pittsburgh).

The large units, which measure 4.76 x 3.9 x 1.64 ft but weigh only 41.1 lb, are produced by GMP Poliuretani S.p.A. using the new Foiled PUR Technology (FPT). A thermoformed PVC film is back-molded with Baydur 60 at low pressure.

The film provides a high-quality surface and eliminates the need for paint. Because the liquid PUR mixture is processed at low temperatures, cost-effective aluminum molds can be used for the application.
