In-Stat Reports Digital Satellite Set Top Market to Reach 79 Million Units by 2009.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The digital satellite set top box market, by far the largest of the digital TV set top box markets, reached 65 million units in 2005 and will grow to 79 million units by 2009, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). Digital satellite set top boxes include pay-TV boxes whose features are often specified by satellite pay-TV providers, and Free-To-Air (FTA FTA

) boxes that are used to receive unencrypted TV signals, the high-tech market research firm says.

"We are seeing a more pronounced dichotomy between full-featured boxes that are used by pay-TV providers to offer other services in addition to satellite TV reception and basic boxes for TV reception only," says Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. "Advanced features include hard drives for DVR (1) (Digital Video Recorder) A device that records video onto a hard disk from one or more ceiling mounted video cameras. Part of a security system, the DVR typically supports 4, 8 or 16 separate camera channels.  services, multiple tuners, more connectivity options, and high-definition decoding for receiving HD signals."

A recent report by In-Stat found the following:

--H.264 coding and 8PSK (1) See preshared keys.

(2) (Phase Shift Keying) A simple digital modulation technique that uses two different phase angles for 0 and 1. Quadrature PSK (QPSK) uses four phase shifts for each two bits of input. See phase modulation and DPSK.
modulation are becoming common among providers for the delivery of HD signals; thereby increasing the demand for 8PSK demodulator See demodulate.
Demodulator

ICs and H.264 decoder ICs in the set top boxes.

--Connectivity options in advanced boxes today include USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
in many DVR boxes and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) A digital interface for audio and video signals designed as a single-cable solution for home theater and consumer electronics equipment.  in most HD boxes.

--More Ethernet connections in satellite set top boxes are likely in the future as more satellite pay-TV providers offer services in partnership with broadband providers.

The recent In-Stat research, "Digital Satellite Set Top Boxes" (#IN0502143ME), covers the global satellite set top box market. It includes analysis of the events influencing digital satellite set top boxes, new features being added, and how reductions in component costs are enabling less-expensive boxes. Five-year forecasts of unit shipments, ASPs, revenues, and bill-of-materials are provided by region. In addition, the research examines the expected growth of HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates , DVR, and satellite/IPTV boxes.
