In tribute.The Journal marks the passing of Agnes P Snyder, past President of the American Physical Therapy Association (1958-1961), on June 28, 2004. She also served as the Speaker of the House of Delegates (1956-1958) and as a member of the Board of Directors. She received the Lucy Blair Service Award in 1972. After receiving a degree in physical education from Marshall College, Huntington, WVa, she joined The US Army in 1933 as Head Physiotherapy Aide at Walter Reed General Hospital. When physical therapists were granted commissioned status in the armed forces, Snyder was the second physical therapist (after Emma Vogel) to become a commissioned officer in the Army Medical Department. After World War II, Snyder was sent to Europe to set up physical therapy departments in Army of Occupation hospitals. She then joined the Office of the Surgeon General and served as the Chief of the Physical Therapist Section and Assistant Chief, Army Medical Specialist Corps. After 27 years of service in the Army, Snyder retired in 1960 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the course of her service, she was awarded The Army Commendation ribbon for her work in Europe and the Legion of Merit. In the later years of her career, she was Director of the Division of Physical Therapy at Albany Medical College--Russell Sage College and was an active member of APTA's New York Chapter. |
