The election of Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled due to vandalism. , following the momentous occasion of the death of a pope who had presided over the Catholic Church for almost 27 years, led to a rush of publications throughout the world. Random House produced two books, one quite good and of current interest, the other far less original. Let me start with the last named, the one by Marco Bardazzi.

Bardazzi's slim volume, as the subtitle indicates, is a summary of the life, faith and teachings of the Cardinal in a schematic way, ticking off the dates, the appointments, and the documents one by one. Those who are familiar with the facts will find nothing new here. Those who have read the Cardinal's own autobiography Milestones: memoirs (1927-1977) will much prefer that volume to this one. Perhaps Bardazzi's book is useful for those who are ignorant of who the Cardinal is and was, and what he has written; but, even for them, the price of $23.95 is rather steep.
