The Los Angeles cathedral opened with fanfare to 3,000 guests, including almost 1,000 clergy, in a four-hour liturgy on Sept. 3. Cardinal Roger Mahony anointed "Anointed" redirects here. For the process of anointing, see Anointing.

With an asymmetrical silhouette of jagged highs and lows, it sits right along the Hollywood freeway, a location that its architect, Jose Rafael Moneo, said was appropriate because highways are the modern equivalent of rivers, carrying people from place to place.

The building was lauded by the Los Angeles Times' architecture critic as a "landmark of remarkable architectural intelligence." The Dodge City cathedral cost $11 million and sits on the outskirts of town. Our Lady of Angels cost $190 million.
