In one of the more high-profile, higher ed hiring stories in recent years, Daniel Goldin Daniel Saul Goldin (born July 23, 1940) served as the 9th and longest-tenured Administrator of NASA from April 1, 1992, to November 17, 2001. He was appointed by President George H. W. Bush and served under three presidential administrations.  was paid $1.8 million to not take the presidency of Boston University Boston University, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; founded 1839, chartered 1869, first baccalaureate granted 1871.  chief was hired by the university this summer with much fanfare and after a year-long search. But it seems that Goldin, an executive with no higher ed experience, took the job under the condition that former chancellor John Silber--a major force in BU leadership since the 1970s--be fully out of the leadership circle. Goldin wanted to be free to lead a new team with a new style. It then surfaced in the press that Goldin was planning a dean sweep of administrative leadership. At the same time several trustees, known to be Silber loyalists Loyalists, in the American Revolution, colonials who adhered to the British cause. The patriots referred to them as Tories. Although Loyalists were found in all social classes and occupations, a disproportionately large number were engaged in commerce and the , questioned whether Goldin's style would be too abrupt for BU. Goldin at first vowed to fight for the job but agreed, by early November, to the contract buyout.
