Alexander Berger, CPA Alexander Berger, CPA, a former president of the Silicon Valley/San Jose Chapter, died Sept. 14. He was 89. County, was the second president of the San Jose Chapter, serving 1951-52. After graduating with a degree in civil engineering from Stanford University, Berger switched course to focus on accounting. He received an accounting degree from Golden Gate College and began his accounting career with a series of firms, including Dun & Bradstreet, Price Waterhouse and John Forbes & Co. In 1949, Berger opened his office as a sole practitioner. The firm was renamed Berger/Lewis in 1968. Today, the firm's headquarters in San Jose numbers 46 employees, with a satellite office in Santa Cruz with nine employees. Berger's community spirit was vast. He served on the boards of Kiwanis International San Jose, the Volunteers of America Volunteers of America, national nondenominational organization providing a wide variety of human services as part of a Christian ministry of service. Founded (1896) by Ballington and Maud Booth (see Booth, family) after their withdrawal from the Salvation Army, the , the Visiting Nurses Association, the Junior Jaycees, and was treasurer of the Los Altos Lutheran Church, as well as chairman of the finance committee for Foothills Congregational Church. Last year, the SV/SJ Chapter awarded Berger its first Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the profession. |
