Earl Butz, 98, Former Secy of Ag and dean of Purdue University's College of Agriculture.

Raised on an Indiana farm, he received a scholarship from 4-H and earned a B.S. in agriculture from Purdue in 1932 and the university's first doctoral degree in agricultural economics in 1937.

He joined Purdue's Dept of Agricultural Economics in 1937, serving as head of the department from 1946 to 1954. He then became Dean of Agriculture in 1957, serving until 1967.

His governmental post experience includes, Ass't Secy of Ag, and Secy of Ag serving in the Nixon and Ford administrations..

In 1999, he donated $1 million to Purdue's Dept of Agricultural Economics.
