In memoriam: James F. Slevin.


AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) An audio compression technology that is part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. AAC, especially MPEG-4 AAC, provides greater compression and better sound quality than MP3, which also came out of the MPEG standard.  & U notes with deep sadness and regret the death on March 1, 2006, of James F. Slevin, professor of English and director of the Office of Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service at Georgetown University Georgetown University, in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.; Jesuit; coeducational; founded 1789 by John Carroll, chartered 1815, inc. 1844. Its law and medical schools are noteworthy, and its archives are especially rich in letters and manuscripts by and . In addition to his distinguished career at Georgetown, where he taught since 1976, Professor Slevin was an active and influential member of the AAC & U community. His contributions to AAC & U--on graduate education, students' intellectual development, and our responsibilities for social justice--were far-reaching.

Professor Slevin served as a consultant to AAC & U's FIPSE-funded project on Preparing Graduate Students for the Responsibilities of College Teachers. This pilot project, which engaged graduate students at three major universities with faculty and students in partner liberal arts colleges It may never be fully completed or, depending on its its nature, it may be that it can never be completed. However, new and revised entries in the list are always welcome.

) initiative. As an evaluator and consultant, Slevin traveled to many campuses and advised PFF leaders. He was also a regular speaker at PFF national meetings.
