"Optimizing Cleaning Energy in Batch and Inline Cleaning Systems: Phase II"

Abstract: In 2004, Stach and Bixenman found that defining an optimized electronics assembly cleaning system requires an understanding of the balance between the static (kinetic) and dynamic (potential) energies to achieve maximized cleaning performance. Attributes or characteristics that influence cleaning performance center around surface energy, surface tension, capillary capillary (kăp`əlĕr'ē), microscopic blood vessel, smallest unit of the circulatory system. Capillaries form a network of tiny tubes throughout the body, connecting arterioles (smallest arteries) and venules (smallest veins).  action, spray nozzle A spray nozzle is a device that facilitates the formation of spray. When a liquid is dispersed as a stream of droplets (atomization), it is called a spray. The typical purpose of the spray is to maximize the effect of the liquid by increasing the total surface area for better  design, equipment design, time, temperature and cleaning chemistry.

Phase II of this research tests the process cleaning rate equation, which equals the static cleaning rate (chemical forces) plus the dynamic cleaning rate (mechanical forces), using inline cleaning equipment. The test vehicle is the SMTA SMTA Surface Mount Technology Association

Degree to which a substance dissolves in a solvent to make a solution (usually expressed as grams of solute per litre of solvent). Solubility of one fluid (liquid or gas) in another may be complete (totally miscible; e.g.

The study hypothesis infers that a known dissolution rate and a known surface energy configuration permits an equation to calculate cleaning time and distance. Independent variables include nozzle types with various attributes.

The work is a joint effort between a cleaning equipment manufacturer and cleaning material manufacturer with support from industry users. The study correlates data from the independent variables and their effect on the dependent variable. (SMTA International, September 2005)
