Sibling rivalry sibling rivalry Psychology The intense, emotional competition among siblings–brothers and/or sisters that pits one against the other to obtain parental affection, approval, attention, and love. See Cain complex. Cf Oy child, Sibling relational problem.  is often like this: Rose got the brains, Maggie got the beauty, and the grass is always greener on the other side. The death of their mother when the girls were young magnified those rivalries to epic standards. Rose gained weight but excelled in college, becoming a high-powered attorney. Maggie took the beauty route, enhancing her hard body and trying to use it to her advantage. Unfortunately, that never works and Rose must always come to her rescue. Then Maggie does the unforgivable and finds herself truly alone. It becomes their new turning point as both women discover revelations about brains, beauty, truth and, ultimately, family. The abridgment suffers from too much plot, not enough time, but the gist is always there. Ziemba's appealing voice completes the picture. Ably capturing the essence of each sister, the insecurities, the fears and the triumphs, she enables us to root for each woman. Weiner ties up the story neatly, making the entire novel a pleasant distraction. Fiction collections will benefit. Jodi L. Israel, MLS See multilevel security. , Jamaica Plain, MA
