In Dunham's footsteps.In 1993, I studied with Katherine Dunham, and I will always remember her (see website for obituary and "Transitions," p. 82). When I was in Dunham technique classes, those who danced in her company reminded us that when Miss Dunham balanced, she rose so high that her pinky toes waved in the air. Atop her matchless feet, Dunham achieved a wholeness of vision to which most of us can only aspire as·pire intr.v. as·pired, as·pir·ing, as·pires 1. To have a great ambition or ultimate goal; desire strongly: aspired to stardom. 2. . Her determined commitment to erase boundaries between races, disciplines, and cultures remains uniquely compelling. Miss Dunham's broad, humanistic hu·man·ist n. 1. A believer in the principles of humanism. 2. One who is concerned with the interests and welfare of humans. 3. a. A classical scholar. b. A student of the liberal arts. vision is, if anything, more desperately needed today than ever. May we seek to follow in her footsteps. May we rise up to meet her expectations.
