In & out of love.Clearly, Fr. Randall Phillips ("Gift or Curse?" September 10) likes falling in love--and as frequently as possible. He even seems to suggest it is his due, given the long hours he puts in. Most adults work twelve-to-sixteen-hour days--ask any working parent or conscientious professional. Yet we manage to do it without rewarding ourselves with the titillations of "mutual longing." Falling in love is easy. Loving is quite another matter. An art, really, that takes a lifetime to perfect. And it is one that does not habitually seek objects who, in turn, provide that New Age anodyne anodyne /an·o·dyne/ (an´ah-din) 1. relieving pain. 2. a medicine that eases pain. an·o·dyne n. An agent that relieves pain. : affirmation. At first reading, I assumed Phillips was a callow butterfly, newly hatched out of seminary seminary Educational institution, usually for training in theology. In the U.S. the term was formerly also used to refer to institutions of higher learning for women, often teachers' colleges. . But, no, he is a pastor.
