Impressionism: Selections from Five American Museums.

IMPRESSIONISM: SELECTIONS FROM FIVE AMERICAN MUSEUMS. Marc S. Gerstein. New York: Hudson Hills Press, 1989. Illustrated, 200 pp., hardbound, $40.00.

This lavishly illustrated account of America's favored art style, Impressionism, represents an unprecedented cooperative venture involving five major American museums. The Carnegie Museum of Art of Pittsburgh, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art of Kansas City, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art pooled their Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces to form what is perhaps the most inclusive and impressive collection of Impressionist masterpieces ever assembled. Twenty-one artists, from Bazille to Vuillard, have their work reproduced in full color, facing an essay that explores the history, technique, iconography and aesthetic content.

The panorama of Impressionist art features thirteen works by Degas (including several of his sculptures), twelve Monets, right Van Goghs, ten Pissarros, and multiple works by C4zanne, Renoir, Bonnard, Cassatt, Gauguin and eleven other Impressionist masters. While each work is critiqued on its own terms, the text grows and achieves depth over each artist's set of works. A valuable resource.
