Imperial Software Technology and Sun extend software development alliance for three years; IST ships X-designer: Java edition.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997--Imperial Software Technology and SunSoft, Inc., a business unit of Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982. , Inc., today announced a three-year agreement to closely cooperate on product development.

The agreement extends the terms of IST's current contract with Sun under which IST's award-winning GUI builder Visual programming software that lets a user build a graphical user interface by dragging and dropping elements from a toolbar onto the screen. It may be a stand-alone program or part of an application development system or client/server development system. , X-Designer(R), has been integrated into SunSoft's Visual WorkShop(TM) C++ development suite. Under the terms of the new agreement, IST's X-Designer: Java Edition, which gives developers a powerful migration path to Java for Motif interfaces, will be integrated into Sun's Visual WorkShop and Java(TM) WorkShop(TM).

IST will also integrate Visaj(TM), IST's new Java application builder, into Sun's Java WorkShop. Visaj, which uses the JavaBeans(TM) component architecture, is being introduced by IST at Software Development West '97.

"The benefits of our relationship with IST have exceeded our expectations," said Larry Weber, vice president, WorkShop Products, a SunSoft business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Extending the relationship with IST allows SunSoft Visual Workshop C++ customers to experience the value of this relationship."

Derek Lambert, President & CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of IST, said "This new agreement clearly demonstrates Sun's confidence in IST's people, technology, and future products. We're delighted that Sun has chosen to extend its relationship with us."

X-Designer: Java Edition is Now Shipping

IST also announced today that X-Designer: Java Edition (version 4.6) -- the only tool that gives developers a powerful migration path to Java for Motif interfaces -- is now shipping worldwide.

X-Designer: Java Edition has a Java code generator in addition to its X/Motif and Microsoft Windows code generators. This enables developers to use the same interface-building tool to generate code for Motif, Windows and Java.

Applications that are currently deployed internally may become Web-enabled client-server Intranet applications, utilizing "thin-client" technology, without compromising today's operational demands. In addition, Java interfaces built with X-Designer: Java Edition may be ported back to Motif, giving two-way interface portability.

Real-Time Innovations, which makes tools for programming and debugging real-time applications, has been an X-Designer customer for a number of years. "We have been quite pleased with X-Designer so far, and in fact, are now using X-Designer: Java Edition to migrate some of our products over to Java," said Sherrie Albrecht, a software engineer at RTI RTI - Return from interrupt . "I've found it to be a professional-level tool that has been extremely effective for building Motif and Java GUIs, and made the migration from Motif to Java for our GUIs easy and fast."

Price, Availability, and Platforms Supported

X-Designer: Java Edition, will remain at the current U.S. list price of $3,500 for a single-user license, including the first year's maintenance and upgrades. Existing users of X-Designer with a current support contract will receive X-Designer: Java Edition without further charge.
