Image Entertainment Announces Premiere Home Video Release of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Original 1957 Made-for-Television Production of `CINDERELLA' Starring Julie Andrews.

CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- Image Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq:DISK), a leading independent licensee, producer and distributor of exclusive DVD programming in North America, today announced the December 14th home video release of Rodgers and Hammerstein's CINDERELLA, an original musical written for television starring Julie Andrews in the title role. The program, broadcast on March 31, 1957, has not been seen by the general public since; this is its premiere home video release.

In response to the success of NBC's live 1955 telecast and subsequent 1956 rebroadcast of PETER PAN starring Mary Martin, CBS commissioned Broadway's reigning songwriters, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, to create a new musical version of CINDERELLA for television. Its one-night-only broadcast was viewed by more than 115 million people -- the largest audience in television history up to that time and still astounding even by today's standards -- and an instant legend was born. The Columbia LP cast recording was recorded on March 19, 1957, and released the following week; it has never been out of the catalog.

Julie Andrews, the toast of Broadway at the time for her winning performance as Eliza Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY, was chosen to play the title role, so she was rehearsing for CINDERELLA while enchanting audiences nightly as Eliza. Joining her was a stellar cast of Broadway veterans and newcomers including Dorothy Stickney, Howard Lindsay, Ilka Chase, Kaye Ballard, Alice Ghostley, John Cypher and Edith Adams. Rodgers and Hammerstein provided a new take on the timeless tale with a bounty of beautiful ballads (Ten Minutes Ago, Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?), comedy numbers (Stepsister's Lament) and waltzes. The legendary team was at the top of their game thanks to such musical masterpieces as OKLAHOMA!, SOUTH PACIFIC and THE KING AND I.

Though Rodgers and Hammerstein's CINDERELLA has been remade for television twice, with Lesley Ann Warren in 1964 and by Disney in 1997 with Brandy, the original version vanished after its initial broadcast, never to be seen again...until now. Lost for years, this first television production of the enduring classic remains a rollicking, tune-filled delight for young and old alike!

CINDERELLA on DVD features an exclusive, newly filmed introduction by Julie Andrews, a brand-new documentary entitled "A Lovely Night: The Making of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Original Classic," hosted by Ted Chapin, President of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, and featuring all-new interviews with stars Julie Andrews, Edie Adams, Kaye Ballard and Jon Cypher, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes photo galleries, extensive galleries of rare color prints and advertising art, Rodgers and Hammerstein's appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show prior to the airing of CINDERELLA and "Impossible Things are Happening Every Day: The Making of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella," an essay by Bert Fink, Vice President of Public Relations for The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization.

Simultaneous with its home video premiere, CINDERELLA will be making its second-only broadcast appearance on television as part of PBS' GREAT PERFORMANCES.
