MORRISVILLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2001

Implementation Allows Direct SS7 Over

IP Signaling Access for IP-Based Customers

Tekelec (Nasdaq: TKLC) today announced that Illuminet Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: ILUM), the largest unaffiliated provider of SS7 network services in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , will provide next-generation, SS7 over IP signaling transport to customers by deploying a pair of Tekelec's IP7 Secure Gateways in its network.

Tekelec's IP7 Secure Gateways will provide signaling for call routing and intelligent services across and between SS7 and IP networks. Tekelec's IP7 Secure Gateways will allow IP-based telecommunications carriers to connect to Illuminet's SS7 network via IP connections, rather than over SS7-based A-links. "The key requirement in the transition to next-generation networks is the interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S.  and IP networks," said David Nicol, Illuminet's Vice President - Product Management and Development. "Illuminet and Tekelec are working together to bridge these two networks for truly converged telecommunications," he added.

, Tekelec vice president, Packet Telephony Synonymous with IP telephony and voice over IP (VoIP), in which a digital voice stream is broken up into small chunks (packets) and transmitted over a packet-switched network. See IP telephony and packet switching. , said, "Illuminet is looking to the future by choosing to deploy our IP7 Secure Gateway in its existing SS7 network to interwork with IP-based customer networks. Illuminet's SS7 signaling network includes seven pairs of our EAGLE(R) STPs, making this transition seamless." Miller added, "We are pleased that Illuminet shares our commitment to creating a next-generation architecture built on open interfaces."

Tekelec's IP7 Secure Gateway expands the portfolio of services that providers such as Illuminet are able to offer. The IP7 Secure Gateway allows circuit-switched networks to access new, IP-enabled services and IP networks to access existing, PSTN-based services. Tekelec's standards-based approach protects customers' investments and maximizes network resources. Tekelec supports the SIGTRAN (SIGnaling TRANsport) An IP telephony protocol from the IETF that is used to transfer SS7 signals over IP networks. The telco switch sends SS7 signals to a signaling gateway (SG) that converts them into SIGTRAN packets, which travel over IP to the next signaling gateway or  suite of protocols including SCTP (1) (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) An alternative to TCP that supports multiple transmission paths. Designed to facilitate SS7 signaling over TCP/IP, SCTP supports multiple IP addresses from the same host (multihomed host) and treats the data , M2UA M2UA MTP (Message Transfer Part) Level 2 User Adaptation
