Illinois: new department to oversee natural resources.

The Bolingbrook Bo·ling·brook

A village of northeast Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Population: 62,700.
Park District in Illinois Illinois, river, United States
Illinois, river, 273 mi (439 km) long, formed by the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, NE Ill., and flowing SW to the Mississippi at Grafton, Ill. It is an important commercial and recreational waterway.
recently hired Alice Eastman as its first superintendent of natural resources. Eastman comes to Bolingbrook from the Downers Grove Downers Grove, village (1990 pop. 46,858), Du Page co., NE Ill.; settled 1832, inc. 1873. Downers Grove has undergone population growth and commercial development that include the construction of new office complexes.  Park District where she served as manager of Natural Resources and Interpretive in·ter·pre·tive   also in·ter·pre·ta·tive

Services and managed the award-winning Lyman Woods--an 180-acre preserve and nature center.

While owning environmental gems in Winston Woods, Hidden Lakes, Gateway Wetlands and its three greenways Greenways is a set of three short atmospheric piano works composed by John Ireland in 1937; entitled The Cherry Tree, Cypress and The Palm and May. , the Bolingbrook Park District, until now, has focused its resources primarily on active recreation. Park District Director Ray Ochromowicz noted, "Bolingbrook has always been a young active town, but increasingly I hear from citizens about wildlife and maintenance of woodlands, wetlands and prairies prairies, generally level, originally grass-covered and treeless plains of North America, stretching from W Ohio through Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa to the Great Plains region. ."

The Bolingbrook Park District has a standing objective to provide balance in meeting community needs. Balance between young and old, trendy and traditional, active and passive. Yet, Ochromowicz cited park districts with far less environmental wealth doing a better job with environmental education and natural area management. Enhancing natural areas and expanding interpretive and environmental education was long overdue OVERDUE. A bill, note, bond or other contract, for the payment of money at a particular day, when not paid upon the day, is overdue.

 he said.

The purpose of the natural resources department is three-fold:

1. To manage and improve the district's natural areas,

2. To plan a comprehensive schedule of environmental and interpretive programs Noun 1. interpretive program - (computer science) a program that translates and executes source language statements one line at a time
interpreter

computer science, computing - the branch of engineering science that studies (with the aid of computers)
, and

3. To initiate a public awareness campaign to educate the community to the benefits of natural areas and wildlife.

In Bolingbrook, like all across America, the population is aging. The community sees that someday--and for some, today is the day--residents will leave the sports fields for passive places, scenic areas, vistas, paths, etc. Ochromowicz would like to be ready for them.

Eastman will work in the community to restore natural areas and work with the community to create environmentally literate citizens, not only by offering public programming but also by working with the school districts to incorporate nature education into the elementary, middle and high school curriculums.

For Eastman this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. "This is cutting edge, an entire department devoted to natural resources and environmental programming. Being able to build a department from the ground floor up is a dream come true." Eastman began her new post Dec. 29, 2005.
