If that's folk music you hear, it must be May in Eugene.

Byline: Carolyn Lamberson The Register-Guard

It's hard to imagine spring in Eugene without the Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its  Folk Festival. Like the opening of Saturday Market and the blooming of the rhododendron rhododendron (rō'dədĕn`drən) [Gr.,=rose tree], any plant of the genus Rhododendron, shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family) found chiefly in mountainous areas of the arctic and north temperate regions and also of the , the festival serves as the musical introduction to summer and its festival season.

Now in its 35th year, the folk fest will unfold this weekend with three days of entertainment - all for free and all in and around the Erb Memorial Union, at 1222 E. 13th Ave. at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. .

Headliners this year on the Main Stage, situated on the East Lawn of the student union, will be the Shane Dwight Band, Aphrodesia and New Monsoon.

The Shane Dwight Band will cap off today's lineup. The group, fronted by guitarist and singer-songwriter Dwight, is among the rising stars of the West Coast blues The West Coast blues is a type of blues music characterized by jazz and jump blues influences, strong piano-dominated sounds and jazzy guitar solos, which originated from Texas blues players relocated to California in the 1940s.  scene.

On Saturday night, the San Francisco-based Aphrodesia will administer an alluring elixer of `Aphrobeat" music. On Sunday, New Monsoon will brew up a storm of world beats and inventive rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music. .

Local performers making main stage appearances this year include Justin King, Laura Kemp and the Sugar Beets.

Additional performances and workshops will be held in other locations around the EMU, including the Buzz Coffeehouse downstairs, the EMU Amphitheater near the intersection of 13th Avenue and University Street, the Ben Linder Room and the Fir Room.

The event will feature the finals of the festival's New Song Contest, pitting local singer-songwriters against each other.

Festival hours are from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. today, from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
