Mima - the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, or mima, is a contemporary art gallery based in the centre of Middlesbrough, in the North East of England. The gallery was formally launched on Sunday 27th January 2007, although it was originally planned to open in late Summer  - celebrates its first birthday on Sunday.

And the gallery's first year is being hailed a huge success with mima becoming firmly established as one of the UK's leading venues for modern and contemporary art and craft.

In its first year mima has welcomed more than 150,000 visitors, beating its estimated annual target of 110,000.

Godfrey Worsdale, mima director, said: "I am genuinely thrilled by what has been achieved in our opening year.

"These successes would not have been possible without the ongoing support of our funders, partners and not least our visitors."

It is an Executive Agency of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. , North East said: "We are proud of our investment in this world-class gallery which has demonstrated innovative approaches and strong leadership."

When mima opened its doors last year thousands queued to be among the first to see inside the Erick van Egeraat designed building and to watch a firework display.

In the year the gallery has staged major international exhibitions which have received world-wide recognition, including the opening show - Draw - which included works by Picasso and Warhol.

The current Bauhaus show has received huge national and international media attention. It has attracted more than 25,000 visitors so far. It runs until February 17.

Mima has also hosted high profile events such as The BBC BBC
 in full British Broadcasting Corp.

In November mima received a huge boost with the announcement it had been awarded pounds 1m by the Art Fund to boost its collection.

To mark its first anniversary, mima is inviting people who share the same birthday to be in a special group photograph on Friday at 11am.
