HCSO law enforcement officers have reported tremendous success with their use of their IBIS network and handheld mobile units that enable them to conduct real-time, on-the-spot biometric identification Noun 1. biometric identification - the automatic identification of living individuals by using their physiological and behavioral characteristics; "negative identification can only be accomplished through biometric identification"; "if a pin or password is lost or  of individuals in the field. The mobile IBIS handheld units provide officers with the ability to capture and wirelessly transmit fingerprint fingerprint, an impression of the underside of the end of a finger or thumb, used for identification because the arrangement of ridges in any fingerprint is thought to be unique and permanent with each person (no two persons having the same prints have ever been  and facial image data of suspects in the field through the IBIS server. With this rollout of additional units, Minnesota now has more than 150 IBIS handheld units for officer use throughout the State. Minnesota currently employs more than 9,000 law enforcement officers. The Minnesota IBIS deployment has been funded by grants from the National Institute of Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice.

"The power that Identix' patented IBIS solution places in the hands of our officers continues to be clearly demonstrated in the fantastic field results we are seeing," said Lieutenant Bob Hamborg of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. "The officers in the field greatly value the added capabilities that IBIS provides. The response time for searches from the field continues to be under three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost. It is the twenty-second episode of the second season. The episode was directed by Stephen Williams, and written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. It first aired on May 17, 2006 on ABC. , creating a huge time savings for officers equipped with IBIS handheld units. IBIS has proven very successful in identifying suspects in the field, while assisting our law enforcement officers in becoming even more efficient and effective," Lt. Hamborg said.  task of trying to positively identify subjects in the field. Minnesota, and specifically Hennepin County, continues to provide an excellent example of the power that Identix' cutting-edge biometric technology provides for addressing real world situations. The success experienced by HCSO has also helped demonstrate the important role that mobile biometric ID can play as part of an overall identity management solution or program by enabling mobile or 'off site' enrollment and verification. These mobile capabilities can prove especially beneficial in overall solutions for countries or agencies with less developed infrastructure or with many remote regions. We look forward to continuing to meet Minnesota's needs for real-time, on-the-spot identification in the field and to helping them reach their objective of an IBIS for every officer."

About Identix IBIS

The patented Identix IBIS system delivers identity information into the hands of field officers -- on city streets and at border crossings -- in minutes, whenever and from wherever they need it, and is ideally suited for every single law enforcement officer who is faced with the complex, daily decisions of assessing a proffered identity. Identix' IBIS system uses a patented hand-held portable data terminal that enables law enforcement officers in the field to capture and wirelessly transmit a suspect's fingerprints Impressions or reproductions of the distinctive pattern of lines and grooves on the skin of human fingertips.

Fingerprints are reproduced by pressing a person's fingertips into ink and then onto a piece of paper.
and photograph for searches against various law enforcement databases. If there is a match, the system returns the person's name, date of birth and mug shot directly to the officer's handheld terminal. The officer can then check the person's criminal history and search for any outstanding warrants using an identity verified through biometrics. If there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files are discarded dis·card

Deployments of IBIS by law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  in Hennepin County, MN, Ontario, CA and Portland, OR have resulted in significant time-savings by eliminating the need to take every suspect into the station for booking just to identify them. In this way, IBIS has also helped to prevent false arrest and increases officer safety by helping to know right away if the person in question is wanted. Additionally, the current IBIS programs have proven successful in helping to remove a number of wanted felons from the streets. Of the more than 12,800 field transmissions that have been conducted to date, over 3,100 were positive hits against law enforcement databases and more than 535 resulted in field detentions or arrests.

Identix' IBIS system and the various deployments of IBIS throughout the Nation have received recognition and awards for its technological advances and benefits to law enforcement agencies from several industry and analysts groups, including from Tekne, the Minnesota High Technology Association and Qualcomm in 2003, and most recently, from Government Computer News, for the implementation in Hennepin County.
