Summary

Multiple grocers fight for OTC share

The major distribution trend in the OTC healthcare market during the 1999-2004 period was growth in sales through grocery outlets, which has brought chemists and pharmacies in line to face more direct and fierce competition. The increasing trend towards supermarkets is largely a result of the abolition of RPM, which meant that chains such Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's slashed the prices of branded OTC medicines, such as Nurofen, Lemsip and Rennie.
