Idaho Manufacturing Jobs up Half Percent; 5 Percent over 5 Years.


EVANSTON, Ill. -- Idaho's manufacturing employment grew by a half percent over the past twelve months, according to according to

 the 2007 Idaho Manufacturers Directory, an industrial guide published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI See Merom New Instructions. ), Evanston, IL. MNI (http://manufacturersnews.com) reports Idaho gained 490 manufacturing jobs (.5%) since October 2005, bringing the total number of jobs gained since October 2002 to 4,340 (5%).

"Idaho's manufacturing employment increased 5% and its plants increased over 7% since 2002, making it one of the few states in the nation to recover from the downturn of 2001," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI. "In addition to its stronghold in the agricultural and lumber lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  sectors, Idaho continues to add workers in the computer and electronics industries."

MNI reports Idaho's neighbors also saw gains in factory jobs in 2006. According to MNI, Utah's manufacturing jobs were up 3.7% this year, Wyoming gained 4.9% and Nevada 4.1%.

According to the 2007 edition, Boise remains Idaho's industrial leader with 369 companies employing 26,034 workers. Nampa ranks second with 153 companies and 7,110 workers. Third-ranked Idaho Falls Idaho Falls, city (1990 pop. 43,929), seat of Bonneville co., SE Idaho, traversed by the Snake River; inc. 1900. The chief city of the extensively irrigated upper Snake valley, Idaho Falls is the prosperous commercial and processing center of a cattle, dairy, and  is home to 184 plants and employs 4,661. Pocatello accounts for 87 plants and 3,350 jobs.

MNI data shows Nampa's jobs were up 9% this year. Nampa companies adding jobs include Sorrento Lactalis Sorrento Lactalis is one of the largest cheese companies in America.

The business was founded as Sorrento Cheese Company in 1947 in Buffalo, New York by Louis Russo, an immigrant from Sorrento, Italy. The company was acquired by the French company Groupe Lactalis in 1992.

MNI reports the lumber and wood sector accounts for the most Idaho plants with 408 such manufacturers listed in the directory. Industrial machinery ranks second with 301 plants, while third-ranked printing and publishing accounts for 266 companies.

Frozen food specialties represent Idaho's largest industry by employment accounting for 13,057 jobs. Semiconductors and related devices rank second with 11,678 jobs and third-ranked electronic computers represent another 10,946 workers.
