IXYS' Subsidiary, Micronix, Develops Off-Line High Brightness LED Driver.SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :IXYS), announced today that its subsidiary, Clare Micronix (Micronix), has developed a new high efficiency off-line, high brightness Light Emitting Diode See LED. (LED) driver, the MXHV9910. The driver can operate from a highly versatile input supply voltage of 8V to 450V, enabling a broad range of applications including flat panel display A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time RGB (Red Green Blue) The computer's native color space, which is the color system for capturing and displaying images. RGB was derived from our own perception of color because human eyes are sensitive to red, green and blue (see trichromaticity). backlighting back·light n. A type of spotlight, used in photography, that illuminates a subject from behind. tr.v. back·light·ed or back·lit , back·light·ing, back·lights , signage, decorative LED lighting, and incandescent lamp replacement. The MXHV9910 utilizes a boost/buck converter topology that is able to drive from one to hundreds of LEDs in series and/or parallel combinations. LED drive current is regulated and peak current to the LEDs, is maintained through an external current sense resistor. LED dimming is controlled by either adjusting the duty cycle of the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a input or by applying a small control voltage. The MXHV9910 is available in a RoHS compliant, 8-lead SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward. See gull-wing lead, SOJ and chip package. package in tubes or on tape and reel. "The MXHV9910 is a low cost LED driver that utilizes our internal SOI (Silicon On Insulator) A chip architecture that increases transistor switching speed by reducing capacitance (build-up of electrical charges in the transistor's elements), and thus reducing the discharge time. The power requirement is also reduced in some designs. high voltage integrated circuit (HVIC HVIC High-Voltage Integrated Circuit ) technology which has better isolation capabilities than junction isolation technology," said Bob DeCaro, General Manager and Vice President of Micronix. "The application possibilities for this device are enormous and we are very excited about its worldwide potential. Micronix has a strong focus on HVIC products and LED drivers, and we are putting significant R & D into these product areas." Micronix, a leader in the design of high-performance analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, has produced over 450 application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and application specific standard products (ASSPs) for the display, communications, consumer, and medical markets. Micronix is a subsidiary of IXYS Corporation, a leading supplier of higher power semiconductors and modules for the global power market. IXYS develops and markets primarily high performance power and RF semiconductors and control ICs that are used in controlling and converting electrical power efficiently in power systems for telecommunication infrastructure, motor drives, medical systems and transportation. IXYS also serves emerging markets with digital and analog ICs that control flat panel displays, medical instruments and telecommunication products.
