Until the mid-1990s, everybody knew what "enhanced services" meant. Through AVNS, the state's 40,000 registered victims can use a telephone to obtain inmate custody status information such as prison assignments and scheduled parole hearing dates. Callers requiring more detailed information can transfer to a Victim Services Representative during normal business hours. The system provides information in English or Spanish, and has a special outbound calling feature that will, if requested, notify victims when the institution begins processing an inmate for release.

"Victims' response to AVNS has been overwhelmingly positive," said Rebecca Watts, special projects manager. "Texas currently has more than 140,000 inmates, and many of our victims want weekly updates on the status of those inmates. AVNS is very user- friendly, and allows victims to conveniently access important inmate information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without the assistance of a Victim Services Representative."

AVNS is supported by a VPS/is 7500 system from Periphonics Corporation. The system has a capacity of 24 ports, and connects to a NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors.
