ITW ANNOUNCES SENIOR EXECUTIVE CHANGES

 CHICAGO, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE: ITW) announced today the election of two executive vice presidents and the promotion of six senior managers at the company's corporate offices. All appointments become effective Jan. 1, 1993.
 Gunter Berlin, 60, has been elected executive vice president, Signode Eastern Hemisphere and Specialty Industrial Packaging.
 Russell M. Flaum, 42, has been named executive vice president, Signode Western Hemisphere.
 Mr. Berlin, 60, has served as president of Signode Packaging Systems-Europe/Asia since 1985. He will continue to oversee Signode Packaging operations and will assume responsibility for Specialty Industrial Packaging. Signode manufactures steel and plastic strapping systems. Specialty Industrial Packaging businesses manufacture hot melt adhesive application equipment; stretch film, tape, and wire bundling systems; and specialty paper products.
 Mr. Flaum, 42, has been president of Signode Packaging Systems, U.S., since 1990. He joined Signode in 1975 as a sales representative. He was named market specialist for the graphic arts industry in 1979, and became director of marketing for Signode's Packaging division in 1984 and vice president in 1986.
 Mr. Berlin and Mr. Flaum replace John Powers, executive vice president, ITW Industrial Packaging Systems, who is retiring in February 1993, after 35 years with the company.
 Michael W. Gregg, 57, has been named senior vice president and controller, accounting. Mr. Gregg will be responsible for financial reporting; internal audit; corporate real estate and services; investor relations; and the tax functions of the company.
 Stewart S. Hudnut, 53, becomes senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. Mr. Hudnut's responsibilities will include the functions of corporate legal; community and government affairs; environment and safety; and the corporate treasury.
 John Karpan, 52, has been named senior vice president, human resources, with responsibility for employee relations; benefits, compensation and pension administration; corporate communications; and risk management.
 Jon Kinney, 49, is promoted to vice president and controller, operations. Mr. Kinney will be responsible for working with the company's controllers and their operations in implementing controls and operational reporting.
 Robert McGrath, 52, is promoted to vice president, tax. He has been director of taxes since 1986.
 Michael Robinson, 46, is promoted to vice president and treasurer. He has been assistant treasurer since 1980.
 ITW is a multinational manufacturer of highly engineered components, assemblies and systems, with annual sales of more than $2.6 billion.
