ITT SHERATON CORPORATION NAMES PATRICK J. BIRMINGHAM PRESIDENT, EUROPE, AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST DIVISION

 BOSTON, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Sheraton Corporation announced today that Patrick J. Birmingham, senior vice president, ITT Sheraton Corporation, director of operations, Hawaii-Japan Division has been promoted to the position of president, Europe, Africa and the Middle East Division, effective immediately, based in Brussels.
 "Pat has served ITT Sheraton well throughout his career, and we believe that his return to Europe will help the company achieve its current and future objectives in Europe, Africa and the Middle East," said John Kapioltas, chairman and chief executive officer, ITT Sheraton Corporation. Birmingham will report to John V. Giovenco, president and chief operating officer, ITT Sheraton Corporation.
 Birmingham brings to his new position 36 years of experience with the company in various parts of the world, including Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
 "ITT Sheraton's well-established leading presence in this region will be served well by Pat's breadth of operations experience, especially in light of his past success, both there and in other corners of the globe," said Giovenco.
 Birmingham joined ITT Sheraton in 1957 at the former Philadelphia Sheraton Hotel. Beginning as a room clerk, he rose to the position of resident manager of the St. Regis in New York. He was later vice president and general manager of the Sheraton Cadillac Detroit, the Philadelphia Sheraton and the Sheraton Boston.
 In 1978, Birmingham was named vice president and area manager for South Asia, based in New Delhi, India. In 1980, he moved to ITT Sheraton's then-Europe, Africa and Middle East Division in Denham, England as vice president and area manager for Turkey, Bahrain, Yemen and Iraq. He was then elected senior vice president and regional director for the division, responsible for operations in Africa, South Asia and Turkey.
 In 1985, Birmingham was assigned to ITT Sheraton's Hawaii-Japan Division and was named senior vice-president, ITT Sheraton Corporation in 1986.


About ITT Sheraton's Europe, Africa and the Middle East Division
 ITT Sheraton's first international property is in this region: The Tel Aviv Sheraton, which opened in 1961. ITT Sheraton's Europe, Africa and Middle East Division now consists of 64 hotels and resorts, including 34 in Europe, eight in Africa and 22 in the Middle East. The division's headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, the headquarters city for the European Economic Community as well.
 ITT Sheraton's objective in the region is to establish presence in the capitals and key secondary cities with upscale and, where appropriate, luxury hotels catering to the international business traveler.
 Although ITT Sheration has tremendous presence in most international gateway cities, there are more in which the company wishes to expand. Already-announced ITT Sheraton openings for 1993 include the 156-room Sheraton Agadir Hotel in Agadir, Morocco, which opened in February; Sheraton Genova Hotel in Genoa (278 rooms), Italy which will open this June; Sheraton Marakesh Hotel (300 rooms) in Marakesh, Morocco; and the Sheraton Fez Hotel (300 rooms) in Fez, Morocco.
 Countries in which ITT Sheraton is exploring opportunities include eastern Germany, Russia, the Ukraine, Estonia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and the Republic of Croatia, where the company will open a hotel in Zagreb this year.
 ITT Sheraton and its properties have received key industry awards and recognition in numerous reader polls conducted by travel trade and consumer publications around the world, including those in Europe.
 The company was voted "Best International Hotel Chain" in 1992 by the readers of Business Traveller magazine, which is considered one of the most substantive travel industry magazines.
 Specific ITT Sheraton properties around the world, including many from the region, were distinguished in the 1992 readers' poll.
 ITT Sheraton properties were ranked most highly in the "Best Airport Hotel" category: The Sheraton Frankfurt placed first, Sheraton Brussels Airport placed second, and Sheraton Skyline at London's Heathrow Airport placed fouth. The Sheraton Brussels Airport placed sixth in the category for "Best New Hotel For Business Travel."
