Though many of the fans hadn't returned to their seats in time, the only play anyone needed to see to understand how the season opener went Friday night for the No. 7 Granada Hills High football team was the second half kickoff.

With the Highlanders leading by 27 points, Jackie Kecskes popped up her otherwise-ordinary kick, only to have the ball plop plop

It was first down Granada Hills and another in a long night of disappointing moments for Grant. The Highlanders went on to score on quarterback Brandon Charls' 6-yard touchdown run and routed the Lancers lanc·er

To open his senior season, Charls completed 14 of 21 passes for 204 yards, with two touchdown passes and another three on the ground. Senior Gilbert Linton ran for 99 yards on 17 carries and Granada Hills intercepted two passes in a total display of dominance.

``We're going to take things back to the drawing board,'' Grant coach Bill Foster said, ``and figure out what was went wrong on both sides of the ball.''

After throwing for nearly 2,000 yards a year ago, Charls shined in his first game. He scrambled scram·ble

The game was expected to showcase two teams expected to rate among the City Section's best. Grant won last year's Sunset Six League title and Granada Hills advanced to the Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

``Coming in, I thought it was going to be a tossup,'' Granada Hills co-coach Darryl Stroh said. ``Our guys did a great job on offense and defense, to hold them down and move the ball like that.''

Granada Hills took a 14-0 lead less than eight minutes in. Ricardo Salcedo sparked the Highlanders with a 58-yard return on the opening kickoff and Charls darted in from 2 yards only four plays later.

Senior linebacker Sean Sidey then set the tone on defense, sacking sack·ing
