Guerrero retrieved the ball but looked undecided on where to throw it, finally deciding to fire it in to Robb Quinlan standing near the first-base bag. Quinlan was unable to handle the short hop on Guerrero's laser throw and it bounced toward the middle of the infield, allowing Furmaniak to score the tying run. The A's broke things open after that as Dan Johnson's double gave the A's a 5-4 lead. Donnie Murphy also had an RBI RBI abbr. Shields was tagged for five runs on four hits in his two-thirds of an inning. For a while, it looked like the Angels would get away with a victory with Matt Brown at third base, Ryan Budde behind the plate and Dustin Moseley on the mound. Chris Bootcheck even came on to get the Angels out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth inning. But the Angels couldn't do a thing to stop Oakland's eighth-inning onslaught. It was the second time in his career Guerrero has had back-to-back two-home-run games, also accomplishing the feat in 2000 in consecutive days against the New York Mets
The last Angels player to have consecutive multi-home-run games was Jeff DaVanon, who did it in three consecutive games in 2003. Trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning, the Angels finally laid off the snooze button and got the jump on A's starter Lenny DiNardo. They used their patented play first as Chone Figgins' single to right field moved Reggie Willits from first base to third. Orlando Cabrera then delivered a fly ball to center field to cut the A's advantage to 3-1. Guerrero then lifted his first home run of the night over the out-of-town scoreboard to tie the score 3-3. His four home runs in two nights came after not hitting a home run for a career-long 30 games. Moseley pitched well but ended up with nothing to show for it. He ran into a tough time in the third inning, when Mark Kotsay followed a hit batter and a walk with an RBI double. Cust and Piazza then delivered back-to-back RBI ground outs. The groundouts started a run of nine consecutive batters retired by Moseley until he ran into trouble in the sixth. doug.padilla@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2731 Angels TODAY Angels (Escobar 11-5) at Oakland (Blanton 8-8), 12:55 p.m., McAfee Coliseum.
