IT'S SCHOOL FILING SEASON SEATS UP FOR GRABS ON 10 AREA BOARDS.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

LANCASTER - The filing period will begin today and continue through Aug. 8 to run for seats on the boards of 10 Antelope Valley school districts in the Nov. 5 election.

In the Antelope Valley Union High School District, the seats of trustee Donita Winn and former board member Wilda Andrejcik will be up for election.

Andrejcik's seat has been vacant since she resigned in February and moved out of state.

``I'm in it for the kids. I have no other agenda than the kids. I've got a lot of ideas, things I'd like to see happen, areas I'd like to see emphasized,'' said Winn, who was appointed in April 2002 to replace former trustee Darrel Brown.

In the Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District, the terms of trustees Jim Duzick and John Sisco are expiring.

The seats of trustees Ida Ward and Janette Crawford are up for grabs in the Eastside Union School District.

In the Hughes-Elizabeth Lake Union School District, the seats of board members William Axelrod and Judy Toothaker are up for election.

In the Keppel Union School District, four-year terms are available for seats held by Cristina Arklin and Bert Hayman, as is a two-year term for the seat held by Valorie Gorny.

The seats of trustees Mel Kleven and John Miller are up in the Lancaster School District.

In the Palmdale School District, the seats of trustees Dolores Dominguez and Tom Lackey are up for election.

``One of the reasons I'm running is I feel I owe it to the community,'' Lackey said. ``We've gone through tumultuous times in the district with the changes and challenges. I think that my training through those experiences has made me a person who understands governance and how to address difficult decisions.''

In the Westside Union School District, the seats of trustees Gwen Farrell and John Ward are up for election.

In the Wilsona School District, seats held by Maurice Kunkel and Sharon Toyne are up for election for full four-year terms, and appointed trustee Patricia Greene's seat is open for the unexpired remainder of a term.

In the Southern Kern Unified School District, the seats of board members Olaf Landsgaard and James Payne are up for grabs.

If any of the incumbents does not file, then the filing period for that seat will be extended to Aug. 13.
