IT'S OFFICIAL: DODGERS ROAD TRIP A SUCCESS : PEREZ `OK,' SO TEAM HAPPY WITH RESULTS.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

The Dodgers hit well, pitched well and beat up on the low budget bottom-feeders of the National League to finish a nine-game road trip with seven wins. They went from despair to a half-game out of first place.

Yet, it wasn't until after approximately 7 p.m. Thursday that the road trip could actually be declared a success. That's when left-hander pitcher Carlos Perez's right knee injury was diagnosed as, for all intents and purpose, a bruise.

Dodgers officials said it was a soft tissue injury Soft tissue injury is damage of the soft tissue of the body. These types of injuries are a major source of pain and disability.  revealed no tears to the muscles or tendons in the knee and Perez is listed as day-to-day.

``I think I'm going to be ready for my next start,'' Perez said by telephone. ``I'm walking better than (Wednesday) and I don't have to use the (cane) the Dodgers gave me. I think I'm OK.''

Perez, scheduled to start Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, spent five hours at Centinela Hospital Medical Center and was examined by team physician Dr. Ralph Gambardella.

How Perez injured his knee remains a mystery. Though he can't pinpoint a moment when he felt a twinge twinge

said he's heard stories that Perez injured his knee by banging it on something during a night out in Montreal, where Perez used to pitch, but said he believes Perez's story right now.

``I wish I talked to him (Wednesday night),'' Perez said about meeting with Malone. ``I'm going to do it (today).''

The Perez incident brought a curious and hectic end to a strong Dodgers road trip. The Dodgers fell one win short of their first eight-win road trip since 1997, but they had the winning formula down to near perfection. And it always began with sensational starting pitching.

      ROAD WARRIORS

With the exception of one game - a 12-3 loss at Philadelphia - the Dodgers' 7-2 road trip can be attributed to great starting pitching. A game-by-game look:
